Feature Control Guide

Feature Control lets administrators manage device-level functionalities such as USB access, factory reset, camera usage, and more. It is especially useful for ensuring compliance, maintaining device integrity, and preventing unauthorized modifications by end users. This guide explains how to configure Feature Control in the Springmatic platform for Android Edge device profiles.

Key Benefits

  • Prevent Unauthorized Changes – Block modifications to critical system settings.
  • Enhance Security – Restrict risky features such as USB Debugging.
  • Enforce Corporate Policies – Apply standardized configurations across managed devices.
  • Reduce IT Support Incidents – Minimize misconfigurations and related troubleshooting.

Step 1 - Access the Feature Control Menu

  1. Log in to your Springdel console.
  2. Navigate to the Profiles section from the left-hand menu.
  3. Click the “Create New Profile +” button and select Android Edge as the device type.
  4. In the profile sidebar, click Feature Control and toggle the Feature Control Enabled switch to On.

Step 2 - Configure Specific Features

  1. Bluetooth:
Controls the ability to use Bluetooth on the device.
    • Allow User to Configure: User can toggle Bluetooth on/off.
    • Blocked/Disabled: Bluetooth is completely disabled.
    •  Enabled: Bluetooth is always enabled.

  2. Block Installation From Unknown Sources:
    • Blocks app installs from outside Google Play, including APK files from websites like APKCombo or file managers.
    •  Recommended for reducing the risk of malware.

  3. Disable Camera:
    • Disables both front and rear cameras on the device.
    • Useful for privacy or preventing unauthorized photography.

  4. Disable USB:
    • Blocks the USB port from being used for data transfer.
    • Charging is still possible. This prevents file movement to/from the device.

  5. Disable Google Play:
    • Prevents users from opening or using the Google Play Store.
    • Stops users from downloading or updating apps outside admin control.

  6. Disable Safe Boot:
    • Blocks access to Android’s Safe Mode, which can be used to bypass some MDM restrictions.

  7. Disallow or Turn off Tethering:
    • Prevents the device from being used as a hotspot or sharing its data connection via USB or Bluetooth.

  8. Disable Factory Reset:
    • Stops users from performing a factory reset through device settings.
    • Helps prevent policy removal or device wipe by the user.

  9. Block Power Off and Restart (Knox Only):
    • Prevents users from powering off or restarting the device (Samsung Knox-enabled devices only).
    • Useful for always-on or kiosk use cases.

  10. Block Turning off WiFi:
    • Ensures Wi-Fi stays connected by preventing the user from toggling it off.
    • Helps maintain MDM connectivity and internet access.

  11. Block Airplane Mode:
    • Prevents users from turning on airplane mode, which disables all wireless signals (Wi-Fi, mobile data, etc.).

  12. GPS:
    Controls the GPS/location setting.
    • Allow User to Configure: User can toggle location.
    • Blocked/Disabled: GPS is completely disabled.
    • Enabled: GPS is always enabled.

  13. Data Roaming:
Controls whether the device can use mobile data when roaming internationally.
    • Allow User to Configure: User can toggle data roaming.
    • Blocked/Disabled: Data roaming is completely disabled.
    • Enabled: Data roaming is always enabled.

  14. Disable Google Sign-In:
    • Prevents users from signing into Google services like Gmail, Google Drive, or Play Store.
    • Useful in corporate environments with managed accounts.

  15. USB Debugging:
Controls access to Android Developer Options for debugging via USB.
    • Not Configured: USB debugging is off by default.
    • Blocked/Disabled: USB debugging is completely disabled.
    • Enabled: USB debugging is always enabled.

  16. Allow Backup Service:
    • Allows or blocks use of backup services (e.g., Google backing up app data, Wi-Fi passwords).
    • Turning it off may increase privacy but will prevent automated backups.

  17. Hide Lock Screen Battery Info:
    • Removes the battery percentage/status display on the lock screen.
    • Enhances security by limiting information shown while locked.

Step 3 - Associate the Profile

  1. Once your profile is configured with the desired feature control, associate the profile with the target fleet.
  2. Once associated, the feature control will be deployed on all devices in that fleet according to the profile settings.

Best Practices & Tips

  • Test Before Deployment – Use a sandbox or test fleet before pushing changes to production devices.
  • Review Profiles Regularly – Update configurations to align with evolving security policies.
